With lots of strong Division I, II and III competition at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh last Friday, the Cardinals' men's and women's team took eighth place and 13th place.

The women placed 13th out of 47 teams in the Brown Division. They were able to beat a field containing Navy, Bucknell, Colgate and many other strong teams.

The seventh nationally ranked Lady Cardinals, looking for a high placing later on this year, were able to put away all Division III competition within the meet.

"We defeated 10th ranked Dickinson - the closest Division III team behind us - by 200 points and 11 places," Head Coach John Lynch said.

"I am looking for us to have three or four girls under 22 minutes by November and our fifth under 23. If that can happen, we can have a legitimate shot at beating any Division III program in the country," Lynch said.

Senior Toni Wiszowaty placed 28th in 21:27 on the 6k course. She was followed by senior Allison Busby (74th, 22:13), senior Alyssa Recny (84th, personal best 22:19), junior Brittany Bezjian (115th, 22:56), sophomore Jenny Schaffhouser (182nd, personal best 23:28), and Jen Taft (256th, personal best 23:28).

This is the third week in a row Schaffhouser has run a personal best time.

"She has dropped her time by 30 seconds in 14 days," Lynch said. "Her improvement is going to help us so much come November."

The individual winner was Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech, she ran 19:59 and is the reigning Division I XC champion.

The size of this type of meet, with the nation's top collegiate runners like Kipyego, Irene Kimaiyo, Cassie Hintz, Liz Costello, Sarah Cummings and others called for a different strategy for the Lady Cardinals.

"Our goal was to go out hard for the first 400m to get position and then settle in a good pace for the next couple of miles before making any moves," Recny said.

With a surprise finish, the men placed 8th out of 39 teams. They bested Division II scholarship schools Shippensburgh, West Chester and Adelphia.
