Last Friday was a good day for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team - last Saturday was not.
A 1-1 record on the road last weekend brings the Cardinals to 8-2 on the year, 3-2 in the conference. The team beat Cortland 2-1, only to fall short in a 3-0 decision at Oswego.
Freshman Emily Riley and Helen Giroux each tallied a goal Friday to hand Cortland its first in-conference loss of the year. Giroux's first-half score was unassisted. Giroux also assisted Riley's second-half game-winner, which came after an extra-long halftime due to a lightning delay.
"As a team, we came out strong Friday," Cards' junior goalkeeper Kathryn Lind said. "We handled the delay perfectly by staying focused and pumping each other up."
The Cards did in fact handle halftime perfectly, especially since the weather wasn't the only downer at the break. Just seconds before the half came to a close, Cortland senior Andrea Marino scored to tie the game at one.
PSUC came out of the break with a good attitude, which paid off with Riley's goal in the second half.
The Cardinals out-shot the Red Dragons 15-13. Lind recorded six saves in the game, while Cortland's keeper, freshman Dayna Moneta, stopped eight.
Getting the ball to the net has been no problem all season for the Lady Cardinals, with a 199-65 total shot advantage overall
