The Cardinals defeated Cortland last Saturday 2-0 and went on to defeat Oswego 3-0, both at home. The wins tie the Cards' 4-1 record for second place with Fredonia and Cortland in the SUNYAC.
Although the Cards are tied for second, they have an impressive 9-1 overall record, better than any other SUNYAC team. And by the end of this weekend, the Cardinals could vault up to first place in the conference.
After coming off a tough loss against Brockport the weekend before in overtime, the Cardinals knew they had two important games coming up for them for which they had to be physically and mentally prepared. Cortland, now 4-1, was ranked 15th overall in the nation, and Plattsburgh knew exactly how to take care of them.
PSUC dominated the first half but both eams were scoreless until freshman Chris Taylor notched his seventh goal of the season with just nine seconds left in the half, putting Taylor at a team leading 17 points on the season.
The goal was enough to pump the team up for the second half when junior Noel Tipovski scored an insurance goal off a penalty kick from Taylor.
Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Waterbury was nothing but smiles after the victory.
"All conference games are important and we were pretty thrilled about the win, especially against a team that is ranked in front," he said.
The Cardinals then faced Oswego the next day, giving the Lakers pretty much what they should have expected on their long road trip.
"We didn't do as well the second day," Waterbury said. "We played a very mediocre first half, but a very good second half."
The game was scoreless in the first half and seemed to drag on even though the Cards dominated the Lakers in shots.
The Cards came out on fire the second half when freshman Chris Mitchell scored the first goal of the game that would turn into the game winner.
It was followed by two insurance goals by freshman Ryan Ormsby and junior Josh Cookfair.
