The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team had a tiring weekend and a disappointing three games in four days - losing to Union, RPI and St. Lawrence.
"We knew it would be tough," Head Coach Mark Stata said, "but everyone played well."
Stata said the three games and upcoming match against Skidmore is the hardest portion of the schedule, but serves as good practice as the SUNYAC Championships approach.
"Hopefully the SUNYACs will be easier," Stata said.
After playing Union, sophomore Tiarra Garrow said that "it took a lot out of her" after a fast-paced match. She had to run all along the baseline from corner to corner trying to smash the ball on her opponent.
"It was real difficult to predict the shots she hits," Garrow said. "You try to be prepared, and ready for a change."
PSUC won two of the doubles matches against Union as Garrow and senior Valerie Papi won 8-6. Sophomores Morgan Dupell and Katelyn Rodgers won 8-4. Katelyn Rodgers won her singles match 6-0, 6-4.
"After winning the doubles match, I felt good going into my singles match," Rodgers said.
She won by keeping the ball in bounds and putting it out of her opponents reach.
"I was playing smart tennis," Rodgers said. "My biggest
mistake was not moving my feet enough."
The Cardinals had the chance to win after being tied 4-4.
The deciding match came down to sophomore Morgan Dupell.
She struggled on her first set and lost 6-3. The next set she looked much better and stayed more consistent, winning 6-3. By the third set both players showed fatigue and Union senior Jessica Meola stole the match in the third by winning it 7-5, giving Union the overall victory 5-4.
"This was a great match to prepare us for our upcoming conference championships," Stata said.
The matches against RPI and St. Lawrence were much more difficult but it provided good experience and preparation.
After RPI won all three doubles matches it didn't look too promising for PSUC, who then dropped five straight singles matches.
