A 2-0 loss to Brockport last Saturday halted the Plattsburgh State women's soccer winning streak at seven games, and a two-game conference road trip starting tonight at Cortland becomes a big factor in the Cards' 2007 SUNYAC campaign.

The Cardinals home loss Saturday followed a 2-0 victory over Geneseo Friday night. Senior Kelly Hopkins recorded her first goal of the season, with fellow senior Kristen Lavigne coming up with the assist. Hopkins' score was a much-needed goal after a few missed opportunities by the Cards early in the game.

An all-too-familiar Helen Giroux to Elizabeth Radigan goal in the second half capped off the win, giving Radigan her 10th goal of the season.

The two freshmen lead the team in points this year. Plattsburgh backs, notably but not limited to, junior Lindsay Gilbert have contributed to the team's great start to the season.

Early chances in front of the Brockport net showed flashes on Saturday, yet the two goals to follow later in the game were in favor of the other team. Brockport's Meagan McGregor and Abby Smith tallied a goal each to improve the Brockport's record to 8-0 overall, and a first place 3-0 in SUNYAC play.

"We fought hard all the way through. They just capitalized on our mistakes," Radigan said following the Brockport game.

Card goalkeeper Kathryn Lind said, "We are a young team, so I think after our first loss we just have to leave it in the past and re-focus on taking it one game at a time."

The Cardinals aren't out of the running by any stretch, as it's still relatively early in the season.

In fact, a win tonight and tomorrow could set up a tight October battle for the conference between Plattsburgh and Brockport.

However, it will be no easy task.

Plattsburgh goes into Cortland today to take on the Red Dragons at 4 p.m. Cortland is a sub-.500 team with a 3-4-1 overall record, yet an unbeaten 2-0-1 in the conference.
