The undefeated season is an accomplishment few teams have ever known. It took until the seventh game of this season for the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team to suffer its first loss of the season.

After beginning 6-0 and outscoring opponents 20-0 in the first six games, the Cardinals got handed their first loss courtesy of Brockport, dropping the game 3-2 in overtime.

The loss to Brockport came one day after a double-overtime victory against Geneseo on Friday night, a game that the Cards won 1-0. They are now 7-1-0 overall on the season, with a record of 2-1-0 in SUNYAC play.

Brockport improved their overall record to 5-1-0, 3-0-0 in the SUNYAC.

"It wore a lot out of us," Head Coach Chris Waterbury said, talking about Friday's game and its effect on Saturday's. "It's tough to play two overtime games in essentially 20 hours."

The loss has ended the possibility of the undefeated season, but it has not put a damper on the season as a whole.

"Everybody realizes there's a long way to go in the season," Waterbury said. "It's a journey and we just have to get through it."

The Cards will take on Cortland tonight at 7 p.m. and Oswego tomorrow at 3 p.m., both at the Fieldhouse.

Last season the Cards went undefeated in three games against these opponents, including a SUNYAC tournament win against Cortland. The Cards outscored these teams at an 8-1 clip in those three games.

The Cards will face a tough challenge on Friday when Cortland visits carrying a five-game winning streak with them.

They've been an offensive powerhouse, scoring 20 goals in those five games. The defense has also held opponents to only five goals in those same five games.

Similarly, Oswego will visit with their own two-game winning streak, having outscored opponents 9-0 in those games.

"The only game that matters is the next one," said Waterbury. "But there is no question that it's two more difficult games."

The Cards are ranked either first or second in every team offensive category among SUNYAC teams. However, the defense has played a key role, as well.
