The Plattsburgh State women's cross country team proved themselves as a national powerhouse as they lost a close race with the No. 1 ranked cross country team, Amherst College.
Senior Toni Wiszowaty placed first, running 21:52 on the 6k course, to lead the Cardinals past fourth nationally ranked Williams College and defending champions Middlebury, while just missing out on beating Amherst by two points (50-48).
"People need to realize that we are contenders," Wiszowaty said.
Senior Alyssa Recny placed sixth with a personal best time of 22:32. She was followed by eighth place finisher, senior Allison Busby (22:53). Junior Brittany Bezjian was 10th (22:56 personal best), sophomore Jenny Schaffhouser was 25th (23:53 personal best), senior Nicole Howard was 41st (24:40) and senior Jen Taft was 71st with a time of 25:07 to round out the Cardinal's top seven.
"We were thrilled with our team result," Taft said. "To perform at that level so early in the season is amazing."
The 80-degree temperature along with the combination of lots of grass, wood chips, and hills aren't optimum conditions for running personal bests, but the Lady Cards were able to log three of their top runners.
The Cardinal women will see themselves climb up the national rankings, but to take over the top spot will be a difficult task. There are still two months and five scheduled meets left to prove themselves.
"It is September and we don't necessarily have the respect that other programs do," Head Coach John Lynch said. "I bet we will be a Top 10 ranking after this weekend."
On the men's side, the Cardinals placed sixth, out of 10 teams overall in the meet. Freshman Mike Heymann led with a 17th place finish (26:34) over the 8k course.
Senior Sean Brinkman followed in 52nd (28:12), junior Matt Burdick was 59th (28:20), freshman Paul Allison was 70th (28:40), and sophomore Jack Swartz was 72nd (28:42) to round out the scoring Cardinal runners.
