Following a close loss on Saturday against Brockport, the Plattsburgh State's women's tennis team swept their rival Potsdam, giving the Cardinals a 3-4 overall record and 3-3 SUNYAC record.

The team started well against Potsdam, winning all three of the doubles matches. They couldn't have finished any better, winning all single matches to complete the sweep.

"I was really excited to see that our team did well," sophomore Tiarra Garrow said.

Garrow won her doubles matches with senior Valerie Papi against Brockport and Potsdam. In her singles match against Brockport, she lost a tiebreaker in the first set but won the next two. She swept Potsdam's Jessica Harvey.

Papi and sophomore Katelyn Rogers improved after both had singles losses against Brockport, sweeping their Potsdam opponents.

They started slow but were consistent enough to finish Potsdam without playing a third set. The win can help their seed in the SUNYAC tournament.

PSUC's game against Brockport was a hard loss for the team. After being ahead 4-2 behind the two double victories, Garrow's singles victory and junior Yasako Aso's first win as a Cardinal, Brockport stormed back and took the last three singles matches for a come-from-behind 5-4 victory.

"I couldn't even believe it was possible," Stata said. "Their coach said that he wouldn't want to play us again."

Stata said there were a lot of positives to build on from this match.

Brockport players have had some key wins against other SUNY opponents.

The team has three games ahead of them as they play Union, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and St. Lawrence over a four day span.

Union has a 1-3 overall record this season, along with doubles loses in the ITA Regional, and could be the easiest of the three teams to beat.

RPI, who have won two out of three games and finished first in both days of the Rensselaer Invitational, might the most difficult. The team has plenty of experience, returning eleven players from last year's squad.

St. Lawrence will be the mystery of the three, playing their first game against PSUC because a bulk of their games are played in the spring and indoors.

So what advantage will PSUC hold against all of these teams?

"No advantage," Stata said.

He said they all have good tennis programs and it will be a tough schedule for them.

Winning these games would be great victories for the tennis team.

"They are four of the toughest schools we play this semester," Stata said, the fourth team being Skidmore, who they will play on Oct. 6.

The tennis team will focus on getting ready for the SUNYAC championships.

Stata said that is what they have planned on for the rest of the season.

To get ready for the tournament the team will be continuing to work on their strong points while improving doubles play, Stata said.

Garrow said she will continue working to improve her serve.
