The Plattsburgh State cross country teams used the recent New York University Invitational as a training session and preview for the rest of their season.

When they return to the famous Van Cortlandt Park it will be for the Atlantic Region Championships.

The Cardinal men finished 11th out of 25 teams.

"After a hard week of training, I am very pleased for this team," Head Coach John Lynch said.

Freshman Mike Heymann led the Cardinal men with a 13th place finish and a debut 8k time of 25:59.

"It was a learning experience," Heymann said, who hit 4:50 for an opening mile, instead of the planned 5:10. "I went out a little hard and experimented a bit, but I stayed consistent and it went pretty well."

Junior Alex Sico, who is recovering from illness, sophomore Chris Ketcham, sophomore Jack Swartz, and senior Sean Brinkman finished 80th, 98th, 112th, and 116th respectively for the Cardinals.

On the women's side, the Cardinals finished 8th out of 24 teams.

The Cardinal women, nationally ranked at 20th, trained through the race as Lynch "purposely held back his top 6 women."

Junior Brittney Bezjian (23:57), senior Toni Wiszowaty (23:57), senior Allison Busby (23:57), senior Alyssa Recny (23:57), and sophomore Jenny Schaffhouser (23:59, a 20 second personal best) finished in places 46th to 50th.

"We took it out at a comfortable pace, where we could still hold a conversation," Wiszowaty said on the course which the team will return to in November for the Regional Championships.

Schaffhouser, senior Nicole Howard, and freshmans Jenna Bauer and Crystal Bragg were all able to log personal bests on the 6k course.

Senior Jen Taft, who finished 93rd, has been doing well coming back from back and knee injuries.

This upcoming weekend's meet, the Purple Valley Classic at Williams College will prove to be a hard test for the Cardinal women. Amherst, who is currently ranked first in the nation, will be attending along with the hosts, Williams, who are ranked fourth.
