As does life, volleyball has its ups and downs. The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team, who lost to St. Michael's College on Sept. 11, can certainly attest to that.
Although the Purple Knights beat the Cardinals in straight games, it was by no means a pushover win. The match featured multiple ties and lead changes.
Game two appeared to swing the momentum heavily in the Purple Knights' favor. The Cards led 12-6, only to lose 24 of the final 35 points and go down in the match 2 games to none.
"We tend to get ahead and then have them come back," Head Coach Dena O'Connell said. "We can't seem to pick it back up."
In the final game, while down 27-19, Cardinals' junior libero Dana Bertrand came up big on serve, helping the team win six straight points. When the Cards came within two at 25-27, the Purple Knights put the game away, winning it 30-25.
"Overall they did a good job," O'Connell said. "It's a matter of focus for every single point."
The Cards headed to the Union Tournament last Friday and Saturday. Keeping consistent with the match against the Purple Knights, the Cards were back and forth all weekend long.
The first of two matches on Friday was a straight-game loss at the hands of Union. The Cards bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Oswego, just their third win in 12 matches.
Saturday was more of the same.
The Cards won their first match against Utica College in four games, and then lost the ensuing match-up against Skidmore 3-0.
On Tuesday, the Cards battled Clarkson.
After losing the first game 30-11, they came back and won the second game 30-23. They went on to lose the final two games to drop the match.
"They were pretty stunned," O'Connell said, referring to her team's reaction after the first game. "But they came back and really played very hard."
The Cards begin their season in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tonight and tomorrow in a crossover. They visit Paul Smith's College on Tuesday in non-conference action.
