The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team has made it no secret that they mean business this season. A 1-0 win over Clarkson Wednesday, along with a 7-0 decision over SunyIT in the conference opener last Saturday stretched the Cards' overall record to a perfect 6-0.
After a scoreless first half Wednesday, two big plays gave the Cards' their fifth win of the season.
"Clarkson was a decent team - they made it difficult for us to get shots and opportunities," Head Coach Karen Waterbury said. "I felt like we needed to get a score off of a corner kick or something, because we weren't getting any chances either on our crosses or within the general flow of play."
Well, they got it.
The second week's SUNYAC Player of the Week Elizabeth Radigan, a freshman, finished off a scramble in front of the Clarkson net, scoring on a header.
The goal was complimented by a hard-nosed effort from fellow freshman Helen Giroux to get the ball in position.
Radigan's score shortly followed a terrific play by Kaitlin Collica, keeping the ball out of the back of the net when PSUC junior goaltender Kathryn Lind got caught out, a play that threatened Cards' undefeated streak.
The Cardinals out-shot Clarkson 19-4, a statistic that seems to favor PSUC nearly every game. Lind accounted for three saves and her second shutout on the year.
Wednesday's game was close. Saturday's match at SUNYIT was anything but. Plattsburgh wasted no time scoring on the winless Wildcats, opening the conference schedule with a bang. PSUC scored four goals in the first half, and three in the second. Senior Kristen Lavigne and Radigan each tallied a pair of scores, while Giroux, freshman Leigh Metcalf, and sophomore Mary Bennett accounted for the other three. Giroux and Metcaff also each had an assist, and junior Jackie Rosenberg and senior Meghan Sgambati assisted a goal each as well.
Plattsburgh out-shot the Wildcats 31-6. Lind and teammate Sarah Novick shared time in net, tallying three combined saves.
