Plattsburgh State's women's tennis team had not won a match this season until two consecutive victories over Cortland and Oswego this past weekend.
This gives the Lady Cardinals a record or 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC.
Against Oswego, senior Morgan Dupell faced off against her former doubles partner Michele Giorlando. Dupell won with a score of 6-0, 6-3 in the number three singles match.
Dupell had transferred back to Plattsburgh this year after playing a season for Oswego. This match ended last and was the deciding point in the Cardinals victory to help the team win 5-4 over Oswego.
PSUC won four of the singles matches against Cortland.
The deciding point came after senior Sumie Takamitsu defeated Lauren Funes in match number six. After winning the first set 6-4, she came from behind in the second to win the second set at 7-5
Senior Valerie Papi helped the Cardinals by winning all four of her matches over the weekend in singles and doubles play.
PSUC sophomore Tiarra Garrow was her partner in each of the number one doubles sessions.
The duo defeated Cortland's Meg Cole and Amanda McElroy by a score of 8-3. Papi and Garrow shut out their Oswego opponents in Sunday's match 8-0.
Valerie Papi had lost her first set against Cortland 1-6. She had a strong finish and won the second set 6-1, and then defeated McElroy in the third set, 6-4.
"The player that loses is the one who makes the most mistakes," Head Coach Mark Stata said.
Against Oswego, after losing her first set 2-6, Papi adjusted to her mistakes and after being down 1-5 in the second set bounced back to win the set 7-5. She defeated McCarthy in the third set by a score of 6-0.
Garrow played the number one singles match on both days.
She struggled on the first day after losing her singles match to Cole by a score of 6-3, 6-3. She recovered against Oswego on Sunday and came through strong, shutting out Sarah Marhone of Oswego 6-0, 6-0.
