Megan E. Patenaude, 2005 Plattsburgh State graduate and former member of the women's hockey team, was killed this summer in West Swanton, Vermont.
Patenaude, 25, and her boyfriend, Joshua B. Hall, 31, were both shot and killed during an altercation with their neighbor, John Winn, 43, on the night of June 4.
According to Winn and several eyewitnesses, an intoxicated Hall threw a smoke bomb into Winn's apartment and verbally harassed him.
A June 6 article in the Burlington Free Press read, "Winn said Hall was lunging toward him and yelling 'Shoot me! Shoot me! Come get me!'… Then, 'the girl got in the way and was hit by a few shots,' Winn told police in an affidavit filed with the court. 'I never intended on her getting hurt. She was a great girl and I'm so sorry for her family.'"
The article included statements from Lisa Winn, John Winn's estranged wife, who was present that evening. She said she met Patenaude when she stopped at Winn's apartment to look at kittens he had for sale, and told Ms. Winn that she and Hall were "celebrating the fact that they had not been given prison time after appearing in court… according to court records, Hall attended a hearing on four charges connected with an October 26 disturbance in Georgia that resulted in a standoff with the police… Patenaude, during her court appearance, had agreed to pay a fine for a shoplifting charge and a minor larceny case was dismissed, records show."
Ms. Winn said Hall was upset that Patenaude had visited Winn and "accused Winn of having sex with Patenaude."
The conflict between Hall and Winn escalated and Hall challenged Winn to get his gun and began kicking in Winn's door and damaging his vehicle. Winn took his gun and went outside to confront Hall, and Ms. Winn dialed 911.
Winn began shooting at Hall, and Patenaude was struck when she tried to intervene.
Witnesses said Winn immediately set his gun on the hood of his truck and surrendered when police arrived.
