After speculation about plans to renovate Hudson Hall in the summer of 2007, plans are right on schedule.

"There were never plans for construction in 2007 - construction is supposed to start in summer 2008," Dean of Arts and Sciences Kathleen Lavoie said.

The Hudson renovation is only one of several to take place over the next several years, as Ward and Beaumont Hall are included in the $50 million renovation project.

One of the more notable features of this project to be built is a new extension of Hudson that will be strictly devoted to chemistry labs.

Construction of the three-story building is expected to begin in the summer of 2008 and should be completed by 2010.

The new extension of Hudson Hall was the result of careful planning and productive thinking.

"We were stuck a long time about what to do about chemistry labs. They wanted us to renovate the existing labs, but it's so expensive to renovate a chemistry lab in an old building… so we said 'let's build a new building and it will cost less,'" Lavoie said.

New chemistry labs were a major request of in the chemistry department.

"It's something that was needed - the building we are currently in was built in the early '60s.

A newer building will definitely allow us to do the things we need to do as far as teaching and research," associate chemistry professor Dexter Criss said.

Apart from the addition of a new building, Hudson itself will also be renovated, undergoing renovations on all its floors excluding the Planetarium and Room 106.

Hudson will be hosting some new residents, as well.

Biology majors will move out of Beaumont Hall and into Hudson once the renovations are complete.

Renovation of Hudson will begin in 2010 and are expected to be completed by 2012.

Ward Hall is also set to undergo some renovations, and is the reason why none of renovations in Hudson Hall will delay any future academic plans.

While the Hudson extension is constructed, Ward will be renovated to accommodate some chemistry faculty members who will be displaced once renovations of Hudson itself begin.

Once the Hudson and Ward projects are completed, Beaumont Hall will be the last to undergo renovations.

The buzz over a new extension has thrilled the faculty.

"I am just really happy that we're getting the money and we're doing it - it's a good investment for the students." chemistry professor Edward Miller said.

The new building will benefit the faculty as well as current and future students by providing new equipment and interaction between all the sciences.
