"She was a very quiet individual, very interested in young people and very proud to be a Plattsburgh Alum," College Council Chair Donald Garrant said.
Marcelene Kavanaugh, a close and personal friend of Flynt's and executrix of her estate, described her as "tasteful, eloquent, sincere, genuine, skillful, loyal, competent, creative and cooperative".
While Flynt's gift is the largest cash gift in the college's history, other significant contributions have been made over the years. These include the donation from alumni Chip Cumming that helped reinstate baseball as a varsity sport with the construction of one of the finest baseball fields in the Northeast which Laundry said, "Looks right out of a movie set."
Other contributions include the Nina Winkel scholarships and internships for art majors, the Nina Winkel collection of sculpture, and the Rockwell Kent Gallery and Collection - one of the largest displays of Kent's artwork in the world.
"We have certainly been blessed with a lot of support over the years," Hansen said. "This is just the first time that in one lump sum we've received a million dollars. We were notified some time ago, but we had no idea of the amount... we were very surprised."
Laundry said, "A million bucks is a million bucks."
