At the beginning of each fall semester students have little to worry about because summer just ended and classes have not yet gotten serious.

Without loads of homework they have a large amount of free time, a lot of which is spent hanging out with friends, catching up - drinking.

During the weekends, there are numerous house parties, which make it easy for anyone who wants to drink to do so.

Some people drink responsibly, while some get out of hand. When students drink too much, their ability to make good decisions is diminished.

Plattsburgh City Police have responded to the problem of out-of-control college students by adding new officers to help control the college housing area.

With increased presence, students are less likely to make a bad decision that can lead to an expensive fine or even send them to jail.

According to records obtained from the Plattsburgh City Police Department, there have been many alcohol related citations written.

In the first two weeks of the semester, there have been 38 open container violations and 37 tickets written for underage possession of alcohol. Both are misdemeanors that carry between a $50 and $200 fine.

Aside from alcohol violations, there have been 21 citations given out for disorderly conduct.

This can range from a fight outside a bar or house to someone being out of control in the middle of the street. There have also been 33 citations given out in the college area for noise ordinance violations.

Most times, it is a neighbor that calls the police because it is too loud for the resident to handle.

Nancy Monette has lived in Plattsburgh for most of her life.

To be frank, she is fed up with the relationship the students have with the community.

Last January, the Plattsburgh City-College Commissions team was formed.

Monette had been pitching the idea to the town and the school and she finally got somewhere. The goal is to make the relationship between the students and the residents a healthy one.
