MALONE - The indictments of sixteen people for alleged involvement in a North Country-based drug smuggling and distribution organization were unsealed Tuesday.
It was the culmination of a major investigation by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies that they say involved 1,765 pounds of marijuana as well as cocaine, ecstasy and methamphetamine.
Seized by authorities Tuesday and since March 2006 were drugs, cars, guns, cash, 4-wheel ATVs, snowmobiles, security cameras, computers and numerous other things.
Marijuana associated with the conspiracy is valued at nearly $8 million when considered at a per gram price of $10.
State police could not disclose at this time whether drugs from their investigation were going into Plattsburgh, but said in general that Plattsburgh State is a destination for drugs in the region.
"The drugs are going right into SUNY," State Police Lt. Todd St. Louis said.
But neither he nor Capt. Robert LaFountain would connect this organization to the city.
"At this point we are not going to disclose specific areas," LaFountain said.
Those arrested - many members of the same family - face a mixture of state and federal drug counts. The seven charged federally are accused of possession with the intent to distribute 220 pounds of marijuana.
Nine people are charged with state felony counts for marijuana and cocaine possession.
