Imagine being Mr. Plattsburgh: Standing on a stage in front of people cheering you on, having the support of your friends and fellow peers, winning prizes like a crown and a pimp cup all for a good cause.

T.A.W.S. (Together All Women are Strong) is holding their own Mr. Plattsburgh competition on May 3 to benefit the American Lung Cancer Association.

The Mr. Plattsburgh Competition is put on every spring semester. Every year, T.A.W.S chooses a different charity to donate money to. Last year they chose to donate to a diabetes charity. This year, they are trying to make a more exciting show.

"We're going for a bigger and better show than ever before" said T.A.W.S President, Alaina Hart.

They have been preparing for this event since last year. Amy Hillenbrand, social chair, said this event can "encourage the campus to take a study break, come out, see a great show and donate to a great cause to summarize the end of the year."

T.A.W.S is a community service organization that has done other community service events including the Annual Dodge Ball tournament, Bowling for Books, and Relay for Life. They have donated to heart disease, breast disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Missing and Exploited children organizations. They have also written letters to soldiers in Iraq and sent them care packages all during this school year.

Damien Dedonatis, who won the title of Mr. Plattsburgh last year, said he had a fun time during the competition. He said this was a great way to meet different people for a good cause. He also said this was something fun and new and it was a good way to make people smile.

Dedonatis said the competition is a good way to get rid of stage fright, helps with public speaking and he would do it again. His said his advice to contestants would be to get out there, have fun, not take it too seriously, remember it's for a good cause and have a positive attitude.

"Pretend everyone is in their underwear," he said laughing. "Just feel comfortable with yourself and the crowd will back you up."

Men who would like to sign up for the event can do so at the T.A.W.S table in the ACC from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The competition takes place in the Warren Ballrooms and starts at 7 p.m.

The event includes a performance by Minor Adjustments, music, and refreshments.

A $3 donation is needed for the American Lung Cancer Association from the audience. This event is also sponsored by C.A.S and is being hosted by Jaleah Keitt and last year's winner, Dedonatis.

The competition has between 8 and 10 contestants who are all from different backgrounds. There is no entry fee for the contestants. All contestants will receive free food and beverages and can win prizes.

Those who sign up should have casual wear, formal wear, sleep wear, a talent of their choice, and should be prepared to answer questions. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges by both faculty and staff and will keep the title for a year.
