They're well-known for chart-toppers such as "O.P.P." and "Hip-Hop Hooray" and won a 1995 Grammy Award for "Poverty's Paradise". Their musical career peaking in the early-to-mid 1990s, Naughty by Nature has released nine albums consisting of new tracks and, this Saturday, will play at the Plattsburgh State 2007 Summer Kick-Off Concert.
Vincent Brown and Anthony Criss - better known as Vinnie and Treach, the remaining two members of the once three-member band Naughty by Nature - will be the third act of the concert.
Naughty by Nature was chosen by the Activities Coordination Board (ACB) and offered $10,500 to perform at the concert. Although they were not the first choice, Elizabeth Thompson, Student Association vice president of activities, is excited to see them perform.
"A lot of people are excited to see Naughty by Nature perform," Thompson said. "I think they'll be really good."
Performing at college events is a big part of Naughty by Nature's touring schedule, Brown said. Since the release of their 2002 album, "Iicons", the duo has also participated in radio shows and club events.
Naughty by Nature has a history of performing in MTV's spring break concerts, and they hope to bring that feeling to Plattsburgh this weekend.
"We anticipate the kids will be in spring-break mode," Brown said. "We've played a lot of spring and summer events. We want to rekindle that vibe for the students.
Although they have never played in or around Plattsburgh, the hip-hop artists are looking forward to the trip. Because upstate New York and New York City are two different worlds - upstate New York being the less recognized of the two - Brown said he feels good about performing here and is hoping to see a large turnout.
"It's not where you're from or where you are, it's the people that make the difference," Brown said.
Naughty by Nature will perform many of the upbeat crowd pleasers people expect, such as "O.P.P", "Hip-Hop Hooray" and "Jamboree", as well as some of the lesser known songs that can still make an impact at concerts such as "Craziest" and "What You Wanna Do?".
PSUC sophomore Joe Munech said if he goes to the concert he will be most excited to see Naughty by Nature perform.
"I'd be stoked on 'Hip-Hop Hooray'," Munech said.
After the show, Naughty by Nature will stay to sign autographs, take pictures and hang out with students before they leave.
"We'll definitely hang out for a while after the show," Brown said. "We're there to participate. It's great interacting with fans."
