The self-proclaimed "white boy singing soul music," Marc Broussard, will headline Plattsburgh State's 2007 Summer Kick-Off Concert. With an adventurous music style, Broussard blends many genres of music to create a sound unique to his talents.
Broussard co-wrote all 11 tracks on his debut album, "Carencro", named after his Louisiana hometown.
Although this will be Broussard's first time performing in the area he is excited for the show and to see family he has living in the area.
"We always expect the fans to have a good time since we always have a good time," Broussard said.
Broussard and his band play at many other colleges, he said, and they are always fun for the performers, as well as the audience.
The only difficult part of deciding to play the concert, Broussard said, was making sure the date fit into the band's schedule. The day after the concert Broussard will fly out just in time to make another performance.
Elizabeth Thompson, vice president for activities, has heard Broussard play before and said she looks forward to hearing him again.
"Marc is really good. He's not very well known but he was great when I saw him before," Thompson said. "Seeing everyone else will be a new experience, though, so I'm excited for the whole concert."
The Activities Coordination Board (ACB) chose Broussard to be the main act and offered him a bid of $22,000, which he accepted. In the contract set up between Broussard and the ACB, Broussard requested Honey Bunches of Oats, a contract request Thompson said Broussard makes for even days of the month. She said this was more unusual than most they had received from performers.
"I didn't think we had any weird requests this year," Thompson said. "Broussard ended up having a few things that he needed on certain days though. That was different from the other performers."
Broussard said his favorite thing about performing is watching the faces of people in the crowd and knowing they are enjoying the performance.
"We love when folks aren't familiar with our music and you can see them transforming into a fan," Broussard said.
Broussard listed "Home", a song dedicated to Southern Louisiana, an area Broussard said he will never permanently move away from, as the only song he will definitely play during the concert.
"Everything else is just fly by the seat of your pants rock-and-roll history," Broussard said.
Similar to the other artists performing at the 2007 Summer Kick-Off Concert, including MP3, Tim Miller, and Naughty by Nature, Broussard will be available after his performance to sign autographs and take pictures with students and fans.
