Plattsburgh's annual TnT tournament, which is held here in Plattsburgh every year in the spring, was canceled last weekend due to bad weather.
Unfortunately, the tournament will not be made up since there is not enough time left in the semester to do so.
Plattsburgh, however, has its New York State Championship tournament tomorrow, which is being held in Rochester, N.Y. at Genesee Valley Park. Plattsburgh has been to the tournament before, but this is the first time entering in Division II.
Last fall, Plattsburgh advanced from Division III New York State Conference to Division II.
The team had a much more difficult season last fall, since the teams they were playing were much more talented than the teams they had faced in Division III.
In 2005, the team won the New York State Rugby Conference Championship going undefeated the entire season qualifying them for the North Eastern Regionals, in which they placed fourth.
Last season the guys went 2-3, slaughtering Sienna and LeMoyne College. The Cardinals fell to SUNY Albany, Colgate University and Union College.
These six teams, including Plattsburgh, represent the eastern side of the New York State Conference. Team captain Michael DaCosta knows that the tournament is not going to be a walk in the park, but feels the team is ready to compete.
"We need the whole team to step up and do the best we can," he said.
Teams like Colgate and Union are going to be difficult teams to defeat since Plattsburgh did not have the best of luck against them, getting shut-out by both teams last fall.
DaCosta, however, did not seem too worried about it.
"Those teams did beat us last fall, and it would be great for us to step it up," he said. "We would love to play them again and win this time."
Plattsburgh has been able to play competitive rugby once during this spring season, which was in the 12th annual Blue Balls tournament held in Watertown, N.Y.
The tournament included nine college clubs and three men's clubs. The Cardinals placed a very impressive second place in the B Division, defeating both Potsdam's A and B teams.
SUNY Cortland's A side won the entire tournament defeating the Barrack's Men's Club in the championship game.
The Cardinals were defeated by the Cortland A side earlier in the tournamnet allowing Cortland to advance and win the championship.
"We played great at Blue Balls, but Cortland was very strong and played very well," he said.
Plattsburgh did well in the Blue Balls tournament, and they hope to do as well in tomorrow's tournament.
PSUC does not know who it is going to face at this time and probably won't find out until the team arrives in Watertown tomorrow.
After the NYS tourney, the rugby team will then participate in the St. Lawrence Mud'n'Blood Tournament on May 5.
This will be the last scheduled tournament for the men's rugby team this season.
