Last weekend both the Plattsburgh State men's and women's track and field teams did not disappoint at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University.
For the women, junior Toni Wiszowaty set a school record in the 10,000-meters by beating the rest of the field by 47 seconds with a time of 34 minutes and 40.58 seconds at the Division I meet. This helped her earn automatic qualification to the Division III national meet.
Junior Alyssa Recny, who finished fourth in the 10,000-meters, qualified temporarily for the NCAA meet with a time of 36 minutes and 55.19 seconds.
Senior Jenny Hutchinson, who participates in pole vault, and Samantha Paul, who runs the 400-meter event, qualified for both the ECAC and SUNYAC championships.
Qualifying for the SUNYAC's alone were 5,000-meter runners sophomore Brittney Bezjian and freshman Jennifer Schaffhouser, as well as junior Jen Taft, who takes part in the steeplechase and freshman Amber Heath, who runs the 100-meters. Junior Nicole Howard, who runs the 800 and 1,500 meters also qualified.
The men's squad was not to be outdone by the women and also had many qualifiers for the ECAC and SUNYAC championships.
Senior 10,000-meter runner Bobby Asher finished 11th in the event at the Division I meet with a time of 30 minutes and 54.51 seconds. This earned him provisional status for the Division III national meet as well as qualifying him for the SUNYAC and ECAC Championships.
Asher is a true first-class student-athlete, always putting his teammates ahead of what he does, but he did enjoy his performance at Bucknell.
"I have been working toward it (qualifying) for four years and I guess it paid off. I'll give my teammates and Coach Lynch some credit for their support and training along too. I still have some time to shave off in order to seal a qualifying spot but for now I am glad to be on the list," Asher said.
The other men's track and field athletes to qualify for both the ECAC and SUNYAC conference championships were 400-meter hurdler senior Jason Dessureault, sophomore 10,000-meter runner Matt Burdick, upperclassmen Jeff Dobson and Mike Bauer for the 400-meter event, senior John Daly for the decathlon, and sophomores Geoff Sitch, Dobson, Bauer and Dessureault for the 4x400 relay.
