Rich Higgins, PSUC director of admissions and associate vice president for student management, said, "We are all perpetual learners, but everyone has different needs."

Riley is the mother of four children, including one that still lives at home when she is not attending Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y.

Despite PSUC's full-time childcare, Riley wouldn't have been able to financially support her family if she enrolled.

"It's hard to raise a family, have a job, and all that and go to school every day," she said.

According to Higgins, "some adults have additional needs."

PSUC offers a range of evening courses, including two evening degree programs - one in sociology and one in business - along with Internet classes.

After earning dual associate degrees in humanities and social sciences from Clinton Community College, Riley pursued her liberal arts undergraduate degree in women's studies at Goddard.

She is now working on her Master of Fine Arts in creative writing, which she said she plans on completing by December 2008.

She said she was nervous when following through with her decision to earn a degree.

"I was scared," she said. "I was intimidated by computers."

Through her college experience though, Riley said she faired well.

"I never knew I could write professionally until I went to college," she said.

Riley writes for two monthly magazines - Jill magazine and Homestyle magazine - both based out of Plattsburgh.

Higgins said most adult students who return to PSUC pursue graduate degrees but there are many undergrads as well.

"Even nurses come back to get a masters to become a manager of a hospital," he said. "And when adult undergraduates do come, (admissions) tries to help them."
