An avid member of the Center for Womyn's Concerns, Smith considers herself to be an ecofeminist, and sees man's assault on nature inherently connected to the assault on women.
"I think violence against the Earth perpetuates violence against women," Smith said. "The destruction of biodiversity is destruction to what is female on this planet."
Junior Aimee Heavey, treasurer of the Environmental Action Committee, said she strives to observe Earth Day every year.
"Usually, I plant a tree - there are a lot of companies that give away free trees for Earth Day," Heavey said.
Heavey had a long list of things students can do to help the environment on an individual basis.
"I think the easiest things to do would be everyday things," Heavey said. "When you're brushing your teeth turn the water off, when you're doing your homework study in the library so you don't waste excess energy. Take advantage of campus transportation. And finally, recycle, recycle, recycle."
