Earth Day is only two days away. Many people see this day as a time to make their yearly contribution to better the world.

The Environmental Action Committee (EAC) sees it differently.

Sarah Wharton, the president of the EAC, said the focus should not be just on the one day of recognized commitment but rather on the idea of changing one's entire lifestyle.

"We need to start changing lifestyles," Wharton said. "We want to show people the options they have to make a difference."

These options will be the driving force behind a week of activities headed by Wharton and the rest of the EAC which will begin on Sunday, April 22, with the first of a three-part movie series.

Wharton said the point of the movie showings are to assist in the overall goal of educating the community in order to promote awareness.

The first movie in the series, "Kilowatt Hours: A Plan to Re-Energize America", focuses on alternative energy sources and how to cut your own energy usage. It will be shown in Yokum 202 at 6 p.m.

Two other movies are also set to be shown.

"End of Suburbia", a movie dealing with the idea of "suburban sprawl" is tentatively set to be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, April 23, outside the Angell College Center.

The third movie, "Who Killed the Electric Car?" addresses the idea of alternative transportation. This film will be shown 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in Yokum 206.

The EAC has also planned an environmental awareness event for Sunday at noon in the Champlain Centre mall.

There are also plans to plant trees as part of Arbor Day, which falls on Friday, April 27.
