The NHL playoffs have started just in time before the ice starts to melt. After a long regular season, fans saw teams come close to getting in the playoffs, but some were left on the outside looking in.

This is what you will see in the 2007 NHL playoffs. The team that survives the dog fight out west will hoist the cup when it is all said and done.

Eastern Conference

The Buffalo Sabres tied for the President's Cup with the most points in the league, finishing with 113.

They scored an impressive 308 goals this season with a balanced attack of seven 20-goal scorers. Daniel Briere, Chris Drury, Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek have each scored 30 goals or more.

The Sabres look to repeat a trip to the Eastern Finals where they lost a year ago - and the Islanders won't put up much of a fight to get the Sabres to the second round.

The Sabres became healthier with the return of Tim Connolly and Maxim Afinogenov. These players were valuable to the Sabres playoff run last year. Look for the Sabres to take the East quite easily and win a trip to the finals.

The Islanders got into the playoffs with some help from Eastern Conference teams beating on each other during the last week of the season.

The Islanders did control its own fate Sunday when they played an already playoff-bound New Jersey Devils team. Their shootout win gave them the confidence but it will not be enough.

The Tampa Bay Lightning was atop the Southeast Division going into the final weekend and missed out on the No. 3 seed after poor showings against the Florida Panthers and to the eventual division champ Atlanta Thrashers.

The Lightning were 5-4-1 in its last ten games. This record will have to improve if they plan on booking tickets for the second round.

The Devils are led by goalie Martin Brodeur, who seems to get better with age. He finished with a career-best 48 wins this season. With new coach, general manager Lou Lamoriello - who started with three games left in the regular season - the players will do most of the talking.
