This helps Dessureault become more focused and attempt to lead by example.
This will then help them go the extra mile - physically and mentally - to get into the appropriate zone to succeed.
The senior hurdler didn't always have time to focus 100 percent of his attention into his practices, but for good reasons.
"This semester is pretty easy for me because I'm only doing the last four classes I need to graduate, but in the past I've had very difficult schedules where my mornings were completely filled from 7-12 with weight-lift practice then class," Dessureault said.
"Then I would have the second practice at 2 or 3 (p.m.) and then go from there to a part time job," he continued. "I still managed my time to get my school work done (but) that semester did take a lot out of me and may have taken away from my performances and grades due to the amount of stress."
Dessureault expected to come on to the Division III track level and work his way up to become a nationally-ranked athlete.
While he didn't come in trying to earn a certain amount of individual goals, or expecting it to instantly happen, he did understand he would have to work hard each season in order to better himself.
Dessureault and the Cardinals track and field team will be competing in the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium this upcoming weekend.
As for his goals for his last year as a track student-athlete at Plattsburgh, "On the national level I'm looking to improve on my 11th place ranking last year, and moving that up to first."
