Brendan Kinney was hired to be PSUC's new executive director of communications and marketing on April 4 after working for several years at St. Michaels College.

Brendan Kinney began his job at Plattsburgh State as the new executive director of communications and marketing at PSUC April 4.

The Vermont resident and father of three said he's found people to be very accommodating.

Kinney attended St. Michaels College in Colchester, Vt., where he majored in English literature with a focus in journalism. He was an editor of an alternative student newspaper while attending the college.

After graduating, Kinney got a job at St. Michaels in the public relations department, working there for three years before leaving in 1999.

Kinney then went to work for IDX Software in Vermont for three years in their marketing department.

He left IDX in 2002 to return to St. Michaels, going on the road with the major gifts team.

He eventually became director of advancement services.

Kinney learned about the public relations opening through PSUC Vice President of Institutional Advancement Anne Hansen, who he used to work with at St. Michaels.

He said he had a great interview process and the people on the search committee gave a good impression of PSUC.

Kinney said the interview process for the job was long and included a phone interview, a visit to campus and a long decision time.

He estimated the process started in December or January and he got the news of his hiring in late February.

PSUC Public Relations Director Frances Hagen-Dumenci said she is very excited to have Kinney as the new executive director.

"With his leadership, the public relations and marketing team will reach new heights in promoting and raising the image of the college," Hagen-Dumenci said.

Kinney said the more he learns about PSUC, the more connected he feels.

He was amazed by the passion that students he spoke with have for the college, and was inspired by their love of the institution.

He said he feels he brings a unique blend to the marketing side because of his work in both the non-profit and business sectors.

At St. Michaels he worked in a senior management position that led the capital campaign.
