I have written for Cardinal Points since the fall 2003 semester and not once have I seen the journalistic integrity of Cardinal Points questioned until now.
Since Nov. 17 when we printed the two stories regarding the release of "College Invasion 10", a number of students and other individuals have shared their opinions.
As a journalist my goal has always been to inform the public of newsworthy information.
Throughout the last two weeks, I have been questioned for allowing these stories to be put in the paper. Was this a newsworthy situation? Absolutely.
The news hook was the release of the DVD, which was in early November. We would not have written the story if not for the release of the DVD.
As others have said, yes, what college students do in their own time is their own business. But when it is released on DVD to the public and this DVD clearly states it was shot in Plattsburgh, N.Y., that is another story.
We at Cardinal Points are not propagandists. The story was not written for the purpose of spreading rumors. It was to inform the readers of our newspaper what is going on at this college. Cardinal Points did not damage anyone by printing these stories. That responsbility falls to the students who took part in the movie.
In my time at Cardinal Points, I have always been open to any comments about the newspaper and I will continue to be open to these comments.
Our intention with this story was not to harm anyone but inform the readers about what is going on at our college.

I have a lot of knowledge of this whole situation from another point of view other than staff, students or alum. I really feel the need to respond to Dan Shepard's comment in his article stating "Cardinal Points did not damage anyone by printing these stories. (Continued…)

I don't object to your saying coverage of the story may taint innocent people. I do object to your stating that CP shouldn't cover the story--they are a newspaper. (Continued…)

It isn't that you should not have covered the story but how poorly it was done. The original story was full of inaccuracies that should have been checked and rechecked before the story became public. (Continued…)
