UB leader in Asia to tout U.S. colleges

President John B. Simpson of the University at Buffalo is on a nine-day trip to Asia with the U.S. secretary of education to promote higher education in America. UB has one of the largest concentrations of international students in the nation, and Simpson is among a dozen college presidents from across the country who accepted invitations to accompany Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings to China, Japan and South Korea. They left Friday.

Threats made before man killed his wife

MALONE - Someone heard Stephen Bashaw threatening his estranged wife but did nothing to notify her or the police that she may be in danger. Franklin County District Attorney Derek Champagne said the person - whom he would not identify - told investigators after Juanita Bashaw was shot with a sawed-off rifle that her husband had made threats against her. Stephen Bashaw, 49, ambushed his 45-year-old wife outside Webster Manor Apartments about 8 p.m. Thursday, shortly after she dropped off her 18-month-old granddaughter.

Local woman admits trying to hire killer

FORT COVINGTON - A Fort Covington woman admitted she tried to hire someone to kill her ex father-in-law so she could inherit money to open a day-care center. Karen Chambers, 42, of 15 High St., pleaded guilty in Franklin County Court to second-degree criminal solicitation, a Class D felony. She is expected to be sentenced on Jan. 8 and could face at least six years in state prison.

Disgraced ex-lobbyist begins 6-year prison stint

CUMBERLAND, Maryland (AP) -- Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, convicted of federal charges after using expensive gifts, campaign donations and exotic trips to win access to the powerful in Washington, went to prison Wednesday. Abramoff arrived at about 6:30 a.m. EST at a relatively secluded prison facility in western Maryland and began to serve a nearly six-year prison sentence for a fraudulent deal to buy a fleet of casino ships in Florida.

US Airways launches takeover bid for Delta

ATLANTA, Georgia - US Airways Group Inc. said Wednesday it has made an $8 billion cash and stock bid for Delta Air Lines Inc. in a deal that would create one of the world's largest carriers. The move came despite Delta's repeated statements it isn't interested in a merger. The offer to buy Delta once the Atlanta-based airline emerges from bankruptcy protection by the middle of 2007 would give Delta's unsecured creditors $4 billion in cash and 78.5 million shares of US Airways stock.

Soldier pleads guilty in Iraq killings

FORT CAMPBELL, Kentucky - One of four U.S. soldiers accused of raping an Iraqi girl last spring and killing her and her family pleaded guilty Wednesday and will testify against the others. Spc. James P. Barker agreed to the plea deal to avoid the death penalty, said his civilian attorney, David Sheldon. The killings in Mahmoudiya, a village about 20 miles south of Baghdad, were among the worst in a series of alleged attacks on civilians and other abuses by military personnel in Iraq.

Iraq education minister resigns after mass kidnappings

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's higher education minister turned in his resignation Wednesday citing the government's inability to protect teachers. Abed Dhiyab al-Ajili's action came a day after dozens of gunmen snatched scores of educators and other people from a Baghdad research institute. Around 70 employees had been freed by Wednesday night. Another 40 were missing, al-Ajili said.
