Chancellor Ryan praises campuses for service
ALBANY - State University of New York Chancellor John R. Ryan today commended 11 SUNY campuses for their inclusion in President George W. Bush's inaugural Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The State University of New York Colleges at Buffalo, Cortland, Geneseo, Oneonta, Oswego; the Colleges of Technology at Canton and Delhi; the College of Environmental Science and Forestry; the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn; and the State University of New York at Binghamton and at Stony Brook were honored.

Police search I-87 for evidence in Mooers murder
PLATTSBURGH - Police began scouring at least 70 miles of the Northway Tuesday morning, searching for evidence as they build their case against David D. Couture. The 28-year-old man is accused of killing Alphegina "Gina" Snide, 72, and robbing her home at 439 Bush Road in Mooers Forks. He is being held without bail at Clinton County Jail after being arraigned on charges of second-degree murder and third-degree grand larceny.
Police task force arrests drug dealer during undercover sting
PLATTSBURGH - A Potsdam man was arrested Monday at the Consumer Square parking lot following an undercover operation by the Adirondack Drug Task Force. James T. Farnsworth, resident agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, said Adam J. Francis, 25, attempted to sell two undercover DEA agents about 10 pounds of marijuana for $25,000.

Democrats take control of house, promise new aims
CNN - Democrats promised Wednesday to lead the country in a new direction after winning control of the House for the first time in 12 years in midterm elections. By early Wednesday, Democrats had picked up at least 29 seats; they needed 15 to capture a majority in the House. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-California, is now poised to become the first female speaker of the House.
Democrats win majority of governorships, first in 12 years
CNN - Six governorships switched from Republican to Democratic in Tuesday's election, giving Democrats control of a majority of top state posts for the first time in 12 years. Democrats were projected to need a net pickup of four governorships in 36 races to get to 26. With polls closed in every state, CNN projected winners in 31 of 36 races, with Democrats winning at least six new governorships.
Bush replaces Rumsfeld to get 'fresh perspective' on Iraq
WASHINGTON - President Bush introduced Robert Gates on Wednesday afternoon as his nominee to replace Donald Rumsfeld as secretary of defense, saying the country needs a "fresh perspective" on Iraq. Gates, a former CIA chief, was a member of the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan panel that is making recommendations to Bush on how to proceed in Iraq.

Palestinians say Israelis kill 19 in northern Gaza
GAZA CITY - Hamas' exiled political leader has vowed to retaliate after Israeli troops killed 19 Palestinian civilians, many of them women and children, during a military operation in northern Gaza, according to Palestinian medical sources. "I call upon all resistance factions to activate their resistance programs," Khaled Mashaal said at a news conference in Syria.
