It takes a lot more than mud to hold back the Cardinals.
When Matt Deshane and Toni Wiszowaty crossed the finish lines at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Cross Country Championships, they were far from clean - and far from their nearest competitors, as each claimed an individual SUNYAC title with ease.
The races, hosted by Buffalo State on Saturday, Oct. 21, were held at Beaver Island State Park on what would have been a fast course had it not been covered with mud and inches of water that saturated the grass, courtesy of the previous week's storms.
Deshane ran 23 minutes, 25 seconds on the course, which was short of the standard eight kilometer distance, to win his second straight conference title.
"It was an expected win, but it was nice to see Matt run so smoothly and efficiently," said Head Coach John Lynch. "The rest of our guys had a rough week with sickness. Now they have to start racing good and not just talking about racing good."
Senior Bobby Asher (28; 25:09), sophomore Matt Burdick (47; 25:54), junior Sean Brinkman (48; 25:56) and sophomore Joe Ver (58; 26:24) composed the rest of the team's scoring top five.
The Cards scored 141 points to take fifth place. Cortland scored 29 points to win the meet.
On the women's side, Wiszowaty crossed the line in 22:29 to beat runner-up Liz Montgomery of Geneseo - who placed third individually at last year's National Championship - by over a minute in the 6k race.
The win placed Wiszowaty in the SUNYAC Hall of Fame and led the Cards to third place in the team standings with 89 points.
"I'm very happy with how the team did, and I know we have more to come," Wiszowaty said. "It's real good to have Brittney back from her knee injury, and Jenny is running very competitively for us as a freshman."
Geneseo won the meet with 31 points, followed by Fredonia with 81 points.
Lynch, who said it was great to see Wiszowaty win by such an astonishing amount, was very pleased with how the team managed to beat two of its conference and regional rivals, Cortland (fourth place) and Brockport (fifth).
