Smoke filled the room, candy was dispersed on all of the tables and reggae music blared from the speakers. The Halloween Dance was only beginning.

On Oct. 23 the Social Work Student Association (S.W.S.A.), S.O.U.L. (Sexual Orientation Ubiquity League), Omega Phi Beta, and the defredenburgh, Moffit, Mason, and Kent hall councils held a Halloween Dance. The Dance, held in the Warren Ballrooms on the second floor of the Angell College Center, was open to both campus and community members.

According to Athena Rufa, co-president of the S.W.S.A., the purpose of the event was to collect donations for the Salvation Army and the Interfaith Food Shelf, two organizations located within five miles of Plattsburgh State University College. At the entrance, members of both organizations collected two dollar donations as well as canned foods and non-perishable food items that would be donated to the two charities.

Dan Arkus, a senior at PSUC and treasurer of S.W.S.A., said that the idea for the Halloween Dance was a group initiative.

"Some girl came into our meeting and asked if we did anything fun. It's just an idea that popped into our heads," Arkus said.

The event incorporated Halloween oriented decorations, games, and food. The games, which included broomstick racing, bobbing for apples and a mummy wrap, were played by both PSUC students and children from the community. A Halloween costume contest was held at the end of the event, the winners of which received cash prizes. The band, The Slow Natives, played a variety of reggae music. They played both original songs and covers of songs done by artists such as Sting.

"It was all in the Halloween spirit," a senior member of the S.W.S.A., Erin Krishner, said. Krisher also helped to choose the band and decorate the room for the event.

Just an FYI- this event was sponsored by the SWSA, SOUL, Omega Phi Beta, and 4 hall councils (Defredenburgh, Moffit, Mason, and Kent)

There are a few errors with this article. First of all, Sean Watson was not even at the event, I, Sean Cline was, and I am the president of SOUL. Jamar Fraser is the treasurer. (Continued…)
