What does a team do after having its best season yet?

It gets ready for an even better one.

The Plattsburgh State University College Women's Hockey team had a banner year last season, posting a phenomenal record of 26-3-1 en route to the program's first ever Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Championship and a runner-up showing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Frozen Four - an event that PSUC had the honor of hosting.

In addition to it's successes as a team, the Cards saw three of its players named All-Americans; had its Head Coach, Kevin Houle, named Division III women's coach of the year; and lead the nation in total and average home attendance. A tough act to follow, but a challenge everyone within the program is looking forward to.

This year, the Cardinals will return virtually the exact same team as last season's. Having lost only three seniors, the team will return a team with multitudes of big game experience, laden with players who know what it takes to win.

The Cardinals will bring in five new

players this season, including four recruits and one walk-on.

Assistant Coach Erin O'Brien - a former standout with the women's hockey team - feels all these players have the capability to positively impact the team's performance this season.

"We're bringing in five really good players who are going to make us better," O'Brien said. "We're not looking for these girls to become instant superstars, but we are looking for them to make us better not only in games, but in practice as well."

O'Brien also feels that even though the team lost some really influential players, it will be a team that is deeper overall.

As heartbreaking as last year's NCAA title game loss was, the Cards realize that the experience they gained from last year will be invaluable.
