2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Photos from Tuesday night:
As the results poured in, as citizens across the nation and around the world fixated on election coverage, hundreds of Plattsburgh State students and faculty took to the streets - and hopeful whispers of "Yes, we can" rapidly became victorious chants of "Yes, we did."
In what is being called a landslide victory - at press time, Sen. Barack Obama had received 338 electoral votes with Sen. John McCain receiving 160, according to CNN.com - U.S. voters elected the country's first ever black president.
National news coverage depicted mass celebration in the streets of several U.S. cities; namely Chicago, the city Obama has called home more than a decade. Tears of joy and ear-to-ear grins painted the faces of more than 100,000 people who crowded Chicago's Grant Park to witness history in the making.
"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy," Obama addressed the crowd, "tonight is your answer."
As Obama reiterated his mantra of "Yes, we can," Plattsburgh raised its voice in unison. Though the Rugar Street crowd was significantly smaller than the gathering in Grant Park, the outpouring of emotion was the same. PSUC students, many of whom had never before had the opportunity to vote in a presidential election, cheered and chanted late into the night.
The crowd, which gathered on upper Rugar Street near Whiteface Hall, marched through downtown Plattsburgh as city and University Police followed, blocking off streets and managing traffic in an effort to keep the demonstration under control.
Chants included "Yes, we can!," "Yes, we did!," "No more Bush!," and "Obama! Obama! Obama!"
Students pounded bongo drums and hoisted American flags, working their way from Rugar to Broad Street, winding through downtown and eventually reaching Hawkins Hall and the Angell College Center, where the celebration came to a close as students hugged, rejoiced and belted out the final victory cries of the evening, closing with a chant demanding no school for the following day.
